About the Mounted Patrol Foundation

Formed in 2002 by the members of the Mounted Patrol of San Mateo County, the Mounted Patrol of San Mateo County Foundation (Mounted Patrol Foundation) is a separately-administered, public charitable foundation operating under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The goals of the Mounted Patrol Foundation are as follows:

Such charitable works may be in the form of individual or group participation, or the funding of such activities. From its founding in 2002, the Foundation has granted over $300,000 to local equestrian projects.  Donation History

The bonding of a horse and rider is a partnership unlike any other.  The horse depends on the rider to guide, care and feed.  The rider depends on the strong legs of the horse to carry them safely.  For thousands of years, the horse was essential to living and survival.  Now the horse is used for recreation and hippo-therapy.  To keep the equestrian heritage alive, it is essential to improve trails, enhance equestrian facilities and activities, support young riders and assist handicapped riding programs.

100% of the funds collected go to support designated programs.  The administration and overhead are all volunteers or supported by specific donations. There is a  modest annual outside expense for preparation of  the tax Form 990.

There are two sources of donation funds, Endowment and Directed Donations.

The Endowment Fund began with $54,000 of contributions from the founding members of the Mounted Patrol in 2003.  In the years since, Mounted Patrol members have made additional contributions of $66,000), for total contributions of $120,000.  Thanks to prudent investment practices over the years, the Endowment has grown to $270,000. The goal of the Foundation is to make annual discretionary donations of up to 5% of the average principal balance of the Endowment Fund to worthy equestrian causes in the area.

Project-Specific Funds/Donor-Directed Funds:  These are funds raised for a specific project, or funds from a donor for a specified cause.  Examples include the projects for the All Weather Trails in Huddart and Wunderlich Parks, hitching rails, and the Bill Lane Fund. We thank the hundreds of individuals and organizations who sent in donations from $25 to $10,000 that helped to make these projects successful.
